Things to see in Osaka: Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

The Osaka Aquarium is located in the Tempozan Harbor Village in the Osaka Bay Area., located in the Minato ward. It is one of the largest public aquariums in the world.

There are 15 large tanks, each recreating a specific region of the Pacific Rim. The aquarium is designed as a giant spiral starting on the 8th floor and spiraling downward to the 4th floor.

The Pacific Ocean tank includes the showpiece or centrepoint of the Aquarium the amazing (and very large) Whale Shark. Stretching over a number of floors you get a really great opportunity to see these amazing creatures from a number of angles.

According to the Aquarium there are almost 30,000 animals covering over 620 different species – including otters, sea lions, penguins, dolphins, whale sharks, rays, jellyfish and more.

The closest train station is the Osaka-ko station which is about a five minute walk to the aquarium on the Chuo Line. As you walk over from the train station be sure to explore the shopping centre and also take a ride on the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel (800Y) for a great view of the harbour and the aquarium.

The aquarium is open almost year round (check website for specific details) and admission is around 2,300 yen for adults. If you were going to ride the ferris wheel there was a package deal available for 3,000 yen for both the ferris wheel and aquarium.
